Female Folk Costume from Lublin

One of the most famous collections of Bombkarnia is the one referring to regional embroidery. We want to present the heritage of Polish folk art in a new way, i.e. on glass baubles. The hand-made Lublin’s figurine shows the details of regional embroidery while maintaining all the substantive elements.

This costume has been worn since the beginning of the 19th century by peasants from the lands of Lubelszczyzna, located in the southeastern Poland. Although it had been created by inhabitants of a small village – Krzczonowo, quickly became popular in the area of Lublin. Today, it is still used as a festive garment and on the folk song and dance festivals. Lublin female folk dress customarily includes: a linen blouse, a velvet embroidered corset and a woollen colourful skirt with a velvet edge. The corset, skirt and pinafore are adorned with trimming and ribbons in vivid colours. The young girls wear hair in plaits, trimmed with flowers and shiny hairpins, married women put on headscarves and hats – „humełki“. The whole costume is completed with lace-up boots and strings of glass beads. This handmade glass girl brings memories about the traditional costume and the embroidery from the Lubelszczyzna region. It belongs to the Bombkarnia author’s collection.
