Kaszuby Female Folk Costume

This costume has been worn in the 19th century by peasants from the lands of Pomerania, located in the north of Poland. It stood out from others Polish costumes, because of the use of amber jewellery and various embroidery. Although it has almost completely disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to written accounts and paintings, it has been reconstructed and today is still used on the folk song and dance festivals. Kaszuby female folk dress customarily includes: an embroidered linen blouse, a velvet corset and an one-colored double-layer skirt with an embroidered pinafore – „szertuch“. Young girls wear headscarves or paper flowers in their hair, but after marriage they are obliged to put on an elaborately embroidered bonnet – „złotnica“. The whole costume is completed with lace-up boots and amber earrings, brooches, rosary beads. This handmade glass girl brings memories about the traditional costume and the embroidery from the Kaszuby region. It belongs to the Bombkarnia author’s collection.
